Our grandchildren thought that screening through a bucket of river sand looking for (and finding) gemstones and minerals from around the world was DEFINITELY one of the highlights of their vacation.
They found luck and humor at the Broad River Gems and Mining Company on route 64. They offer prehistoric digs as well!
A short drive past the town of Lake Lure at the southern part of the lake is the bustling village of CHIMNEY ROCK. Take a ride up the elevator carved through the side of the mountain and climb to the top of the chimney if you dare. There are several interesting and easy trails, including one to Hickory Nut Falls. The shops in the village are touristy but fun.
Traveling south from Hendersonville you will come to the Victorian town of SALUDA. Browse the distinctive shops and walk the tree-lined streets of lovely Victorian homes.
Further south is the town of FLAT ROCK, the location of the Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theater of North Carolina where you can see one of their great productions. While in Flat Rock you may want to visit the historic Carl Sandburg home.
Traveling north from the resort you will come to the historic mountain town of BLACK ROCK. Best known as an arts and crafts center, you may also find just the antique you were looking for.
There are two locations for horseback riding: Cedar Creek Stables (which got very good reviews from the children) and Riverside Riding Stables. Both are close to the resort.
